AES-256 Encryption

Industry-standard encryption — the same standard used by banks and governments worldwide.

Password Required to Open

Anyone who receives the PDF must enter your password before viewing the document.

Full Content Preserved

All pages, text, images, and formatting are kept intact. Only access is restricted.

What Is PDF Password Protection?

Password-protecting a PDF encrypts the file so it can only be opened by someone who knows the password. QuickyDesk uses AES-256 encryption — the same algorithm used by governments and financial institutions — applied using PyMuPDF's encryption engine.

Once protected, the PDF will require a password in every PDF viewer: Adobe Acrobat, browsers, mobile apps, and document management systems. The protection travels with the file.

When to Protect a PDF

  • Confidential business documents — Proposals, contracts, and financial reports often contain sensitive data that should be restricted to intended recipients.
  • Personal identification documents — Passport scans, tax forms, and ID copies shared by email should always be encrypted.
  • Medical records — Patient data, lab reports, and insurance documents require protection before sharing digitally.
  • Intellectual property — Reports, whitepapers, and creative work can be password-protected to prevent unauthorised access.

How the Encryption Works

When you click Protect PDF, the file is encrypted using AES-256 in CBC mode. The password you enter is used both as the user password (required to open the document) and to derive the owner password. Permissions are set to allow reading only — printing and editing require the owner password.

AES-256 is computationally infeasible to brute-force with modern hardware when a strong password is used. Choose a password of at least 12 characters, mixing letters, numbers, and symbols for maximum security.

Frequently Asked Questions

What encryption standard is used?

AES-256 (Advanced Encryption Standard with a 256-bit key). This is the strongest PDF encryption standard available, used by financial institutions and government agencies worldwide.

Will the password work in all PDF viewers?

Yes. AES-256 PDF encryption is a standard feature of the PDF specification. All major PDF viewers — Adobe Acrobat, Chrome, Firefox, macOS Preview, iOS Files, and Android PDF apps — support it and will prompt for the password.

What happens if I forget the password?

There is no recovery mechanism — by design. AES-256 encryption without the password is computationally infeasible to break. Keep the password in a password manager before encrypting the file.

Is my file sent securely to the server?

Yes. The file is uploaded over HTTPS and processed server-side. Both the original and protected files are deleted within 15 minutes. The password you enter is used to encrypt the file and is not stored or logged.

Does protection prevent printing or editing?

The user password restricts opening the document. By default, no additional restrictions on printing or editing are applied for the user. If you need to restrict specific permissions, you would need a full PDF editor.
