Why Add Page Numbers to a PDF?

Many PDFs — especially those assembled from multiple sources, converted from images, or exported from presentation software — lack page numbers. Adding page numbers makes long documents navigable, enables precise cross-referencing, and is often required for professional, legal, and academic submissions.

Use Cases for Page Numbering

  • Legal filings — Court submissions and legal bundles typically require sequential page numbering for exhibit references.
  • Reports and proposals — Professional documents with a table of contents need numbered pages for navigation.
  • Academic submissions — Theses, dissertations, and research papers must be numbered according to institutional guidelines.
  • Merged documents — After merging multiple PDFs, adding page numbers creates a unified, sequential document.
  • Printed booklets — Physical copies require page numbers for physical navigation.

Positioning Options

Choose from five positions: Bottom Centre, Bottom Right, Bottom Left, Top Centre, or Top Right. Numbers are rendered using a standard font at 10pt size, styled to be visible without dominating the page content.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I start numbering from a number other than 1?

Yes. Set the "Start number" field to any integer. If your document is chapter 3 of a larger work starting at page 45, enter 45 as the start number and pages will be numbered from 45 onwards.

Does this affect the original content?

The page numbers are added as a new content layer over each page. The original text and images are not modified. The numbers are positioned in the margin area to minimise overlap with content.

Can I add numbers to just some pages?

Currently the tool adds page numbers to all pages. If you need to skip the cover page, consider splitting the document first, adding numbers to the main body, then merging the cover back.

What font is used for page numbers?

Page numbers use Helvetica at 10pt — a clean, universally supported font embedded in the PDF specification.

Are the files deleted after processing?

Yes — within 15 minutes, automatically.
