What Does the PDF Info Viewer Show?
The PDF Info Viewer reads and displays the metadata and structural properties of any PDF file without modifying it. Unlike other tools on this site, it does not produce a downloadable output — it simply reports what is inside the file.
Information Displayed
- Page count — Total number of pages in the document.
- File size — The size of the uploaded file in KB or MB.
- PDF version — The PDF specification version (e.g., 1.4, 1.7, 2.0).
- Encrypted — Whether the document is password-protected.
- Page dimensions — Width × height of the first page in millimetres.
- Title, Author, Subject, Creator, Producer — Document metadata fields, if set.
- Created / Modified dates — When the document was first created and last modified.
When Is This Useful?
- Before printing — Confirm page size and count before sending a large print job.
- Checking encryption status — Verify whether a file is password-protected before sharing.
- Auditing received files — Review metadata to understand when and with what software a document was created.
- Version compatibility — Identify the PDF version to check compatibility with legacy software.
- Diagnosing issues — A missing or corrupt page count can indicate a damaged PDF.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this tool modify my PDF in any way?
No. The PDF Info Viewer is read-only. It reads the file's metadata and structure and displays the results. The file is not altered, and there is no output file to download.
Why does "Author" show as empty?
Not all PDF files have metadata fields populated. The Author, Title, Subject, Creator, and Producer fields are optional. Many PDFs — especially those exported from image converters or basic PDF writers — leave these fields blank.
What PDF version numbers mean
PDF 1.4–1.7 are the most widely supported versions. PDF 2.0 is the latest standard. Older software may not fully support PDF 2.0 features. If you have compatibility issues with a PDF, the version shown here can help diagnose the cause.
Is the file uploaded to your server?
Yes, briefly — the file is uploaded over HTTPS, read server-side by PyMuPDF, and the metadata is returned to your browser. The file is deleted within 15 minutes. No content is extracted or retained.
